Republic Square of Yerevan is part of the original design of Yerevan in 1924. It was designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan and its construction began in 1926 and its first phase was completed in 1950 and finally completed in 1977. This square was known as Lenin Square. In 1940, a statue of Lenin, the leader of the Soviet Union, was erected on the southwest side of Republic Square, which was dismantled in 1990. The buildings around the square are made of red and white tuff stones of Armenia, followed by basalt. The clock tower of the government building was built in Moscow and moved to Yerevan in July 1941. The diameter of the watch is 4 meters, the length of its long hand is 188 cm, while the length of its short hand is 170 cm. Republic Square in Yerevan is a place where important ceremonies and meetings are held every year, including the military parade of the Independence Day of Armenia.
